Hiroshi Sugimoto Retrospective

The special exhibition at the Neue Nationalgalerie will feature the Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto in what constitutes the most comprehensive retrospective of his fascinating oeuvre to be presented up to now in German-speaking countries. Berlin is the third station of a tour which also goes to Düsseldorf, Salzburg and Lucerne. The exhibition consists of more than seventy photographs, along with a sculpture of the great master of black-and-white photography; it demonstrates the great diversity of his groups of works, whose impressive clarity and precision immediately catch the viewer´s eye.

For the Berlin station at the Neue Nationalgalerie the artist is planning an entirely different presentation of his work that will highlight relations to the Berlin collections (Gemäldegalerie, Alte Nationalgalerie) as well as the architecture of the Mies van der Rohe building.

location: New National Gallery (Neue Nationalgalerie)

Raffaels Grazie - Michelangelos Furor. Sebastiano del Piombo (1485 - 1547)

The exhibition has been developed as a cooperation of the Gemäldegalerie and the Soprintendenza Speciale per il Polo Museale Romano in Rome, where the exhibition initially has been presented in the Palazzo Venezia. The collection consists of borrowed masterpieces from all over the world and thus for the first time gives a splendid overview about the multifaceted works of Sebastiano del Piombo in one exhibition. In addition, paintings of Michelangelo and of Spanish follow-up artists will be shown in this exceptional exhibition.

Sebastiano Luciani, called del Piombo, belongs to the less known but nonetheless outraging artists of the High Renaissance in Italy. Born in Venice, del Piombo mostly worked in Rome. With Raffael he competed for the favor of the Roman principals and Michelangelo was a good friend of his. In his deeply atmospherical paintings the Venecian colourfulness of his teachers works Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione conjoined verschmilzt in seinen atmosphärischen Gemälden die venezianische Farbigkeit seiner Lehrer Giovanni Bellini und Giorgione mit der Monumentalität der römischen Malerei.

Between revolution and revolt -
1968 in Latin America. Books, Pictures, Movements

The 1960s and 1970s in Latin America are mostly combined with the myths around Che Guevara, Cuba and Guerilla fights. On the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the ”global 1968” the present exhibition at the Ibero-American Institute (IAI) especially takes into consideration the less known social changes and developments that have been caused by student movements against imperious regimes in the Latin American Continent.

The exhibition is presented by the Latin American Institute of the FU (Free University of Berlin) in cooperation with the IAI.
