A New Museum for the Art of the 20th Century
The Foundation of Prussian Cultural Heritage (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, SPK) has decided to build a new museum building at the Berlin Kulturforum for a permanent exhibition of the art of the 20th century. Hereby the urban planning considerations are going to be realized which have been existing for this place since the 1980s: Already in 1987 for the urban development project "Internationale Bauausstellung" (IBA) an extension building for the New National Gallery was planned but the plan was not implemented due to lack of money. This unfortunate fact offers now the unique opportunity to build a museum with the present knowledge in regard to contemporary exhibition design, exhibition technology and special architectural features that have to be considered.

Kulturforum - Potsdamer Platz
The Berlin Kulturforum has the Potsdamer Platz as a prominent neighbour and both areas complement each other wonderfully. The wide range of good restaurants at Potsdamer Platz has saved some hungry museum- or concert-goers and the shopping options are always a tempting alternative, as well. Alongside there is a large variety of entertainment and shows, but the Potsdamer Platz also comes up with lots of art and culture offerings! An audio guide (available as an app and as download for the MP3 player) describes the attractions at "The Platz" and rentable Segways make the tour around or an even further exploration of Berlin's center to a fun experience.

In return, the museums and the Philharmony at the Kulturforum are attractive destinations for many hotel guests and the more than 100,000 visitors of Potsdamer Platz daily. The new signage concept allows an even better connection and networking of Kulturforum and Potsdamer Platz.

Summer Festival 2014 at the Kulturforum Berlin
___________________________________________

For the first time, in 2014 the institutions located at the Berlin Kulturforum are planning a big summer festival. The event takes place on the weekend 14th and 15th of June 2014 and is mutually organised by the foundation of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Foundation of Prussian Cultural Heritage (SPK).

On both days various places at the Berlin Kulturforum will be transformed to stages for manyfold events: dance performances, theatre and music, fashion, architecture, photography and film as well as graphic and painting art will be in the center of attention. In addition, there will be special exhibitions, concerts, performances, workshops and there will be very many guided tours for every taste.

One music highlight will be the interpretation of Carmina Burana performed by the famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra accompanied by the chorus "Rundfunkchor Berlin" and an additional chorus of many children and teenagers - as a whole conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. A second highlight will be the concerts of organ virtuoso Cameron Carpenter who will explore the different sounds of the organs "Karl-Schuke-Organ" in the Philharmonie, the organ in the church St. Matthews, the ancient organs in the museum of music instruments and additionaly is performing an Open Air Concert.

Another highlight will be the performance of the Education-department of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. THE BERLIN KULTURFORUM
___________________________

The Berlin Kulturforum, with its museums, concert halls, libraries and institutes, is one of the most important cultural sites of Germany. Many well-known and unique institutions are located here, including the New National Gallery, designed by architect Mies van der Rohe, and the Philharmonie and Chamber Music Hall - home of the famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the Neue Staatsbibliothek (Berlin State Library) with its sensational reading room and, last but not least, the Gemäldegalerie, which has one of the most important collections of old masters worldwide.

Easy to find
The Kulturforum is located in the heart of Berlin near Potsdamer Platz. It is within walking distance of many tourist attractions, including the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, and the government district with the Reichstag (the seat of the German Parliament) and the Chancellery (the seat of the German Chancellor) - the political heart of Germany. It is also within easy reach of the streets Unter den Linden and Friedrichsstraße.

As the cultural centre of former West Berlin, the Kulturforum played an important part in the city´s postwar history. Highly promoted, and located near the Berlin Wall, it was also a political symbol of West Berlin´s growth and vitality in hard times. Its urban design is still in line with the original plans of architect Hans Scharoun in the 1960s. In the ´60s, Potsdamer Platz and the octagonal Leipziger Platz, which were not renovated until the 1990s, were wasteland ruthlessly divided in half by the Wall. Thus the Kulturforum site, more than many other places in Berlin, is a testimony to the period before German reunification, which is why a visit to the area is a fascinating leap in time.
