Special exhibition in the Gemäldegalerie
The Master of Flémalle and Rogier van der Weyden
____________________________________________
The exhibition takes a close look at two founding fathers of Dutch painting: the Master of Flémalle and Rogier van der Weyden. Around 1430, these two artists opened up completely new possibilities for the depiction of people and objects in art which would soon be enthusiastically taken up all over Europe.

Rothko / Giotto - Tactility in Painting
___________________________________
In a quite experimental special exhibition in the Gemäldegalerie (painting gallery for medieval European masterpieces) Mark Rothkos work of art Reds no. 5 is compared with two main works of the Italian artist Giotto die Bondone from the 14th century.
Mark Rothko (1903-1970) was one of the primary representatives of Abstract Expressionism of the New York School of Painting. His Color Field Paintings created from the 1950´s on, and for which he is famous, are still celebrated today.
Throughout his life, Rothko dealt with philosophic, aesthetical and historiographical issues, by means of which he constantly redefined and questioned his own position as an artist. His ideas have recently been published in "The Artist"s Reality" edited by his son Christopher Rothko, but written in the late 1930s. Rothko´s thoughts, published in this text, as well as his later works, reveal his involvement with and examination of early Italian painting, particularly that by Giotto di Bondone (1264-1337).
These circumstances give an interesting point to the idea of comparing the two very different artists.

Museum of Decorative Arts remains open
_______________________________________________

The Museum of Decorative Arts (Kunstgewerbemuseum) remains open. The plans for redesigning the exhibition rooms have been postponed and for this reason the fantastic collection of decorative arts can be still visited - among others, the Welfenschatz, epoch-making furnitures and fashion. Although looking forward to the realisation of the redesigning-plans in the near future we are glad that, due to the delay of the construction works, one of the most important collections of its kind will be still accessible for the time being.

Imagination and Craft. Cennino Cennini and the Tradition of Tuscan Painting from Giotto to Lorenzo Monaco
This studio exhibition in the Gemäldegalerie presents until the 13th of April some twenty panels and drawings from the 14th and 15th century. The thematic framework is provided by the work of Tuscan artist Cennino Cennini, author of the "Libro dell´ Arte" (" Book of Art"), a late Mediaeval painters´ handbook on the cusp of the Renaissance. Two panels from the collection of the Gemäldegalerie - Old Master Paintings, a "Bishop Saint" and a "Pope Saint", are attributed to Cennini. These, together with the earliest known copy of the "Libro dell´ Arte, form the heart of the exhibition. Further included are works by Giotto, Taddeo Gaddi, Agnolo Gaddi, and Lorenzo Monaco.

THE BERLIN KULTURFORUM
___________________________
Here we inform you about the Berlin Kulturforum that belongs to the most important cultural sites of Germany. As cultural centre of former West Berlin numerous well known and unique institutions are situated here, among others the museum "New National Gallery" designed by architect Mies van der Rohe, the concert halls "Philharmonie" and "Chamber Music Hall" - home of the famous Berliner Philharmoniker -, the state library "Neue Staatsbibliothek" with its sensational reading room and last but not least the museum "Gemäldegalerie" with one of the most important collections of old master paintings worldwide.
Easy to find
You find the Kulturforum in the heart of Berlin near to Potsdamer Platz. From here many touristic attractions can be reached by foot, among others the "Brandenburg Gate", the "Holocaust-Mahnmal" and the "Regierungsviertel" with the "Reichstag" (i.e. seat of the German Parliament) and the "Kanzleramtsgebäude" (seat of the German Chancellor) as the political heart of Germany. Also the streets "Unter den Linden" and "Friedrichstraße" can be easily reached.
"20 Jahre Mauerfall" (20 years fall of the Berlin wall)
Twenty years ago, in November 1989 the Berlin wall had been teared down. For this reason Germany is celebrating the year 2009 with many events and special exhibitions. The cultural centre of former West-Berlin "Kulturforum" is an important part of this history. Highly supported and positioned near to the border in the heart of the city it was also a clear political sign for West-Berlins growth and vitality in very hard times. The urban development plannings for the Kulturforum-site designed by architect Hans Scharoun in the 1960s can still be tracked today. During that time, the in the 1990s rebuilt places Potsdamer Platz and the octagonal Leipziger Platz were waste lands ruthlessly divided in half by the wall. Thus, the Kulturforum-site remains a historical document of the time before reunification more than many other places in Berlin and therefore a walk over the site is always an interesting leap in the past as well.
